Is Tommy Fury Related to Tyson Fury?

In 2019, a new series of Love Island began on ITV. Viewers tuned in to watch the mind-numbing show and see who would emerge victorious, with some quickly questioning why they’d heard the name ‘Fury’ before. Tommy Fury was one of the contestants, having put his boxing career on hold in order to take part. The combination of his surname and his career made many people think of Tyson Fury, the heavyweight champion known as the Gypsy King. Were people putting two and two together and getting five, or is there actually a link between the two people that is about more than just punching people and sharing a name?

Who Are We Talking About?

Not everyone likes boxing as a sport, so it is entirely possible that you’ve managed to avoid finding out who either of the protagonists in this story actually are. It is also more than likely that you’ve never watched Love Island in your life, choosing instead to stick needles into your own eyes or paint a wall and then sit and watch it dry. As a result, you wouldn’t be all that clear about who Tommy Fury is, nor would you be all that clear about why Tyson Fury is someone you should know about. As a result, here is a quick look at the pair of them to explain who it is that we’re talking about:

Tyson Fury

Born in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester on the 12th of August 1988, Tyson Luke Fury is the son of Amber and John Fury. From an Irish Traveller community, he was named after the American boxer Mike Tyson, with the hope being that he would be instilled with the same fighting spirit, given the fact that he was born premature and weighed just one pound. He went on to become a boxer, becoming the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion in 2015 and then again in 2020. Considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, he is known as the Gypsy King and has expressed homophobic and misogynistic opinions in the past.

Tommy Fury

Born in Manchester on the seventh of May 1999, Thomas Michael John Fury is the son of John Fury and Chantal, who is of Mauritian descent. He made his professional boxing debut on the 22nd of December 2018 when he defeated Jevgenijs Andrejevs. He also won his second fight a few months later, this time against Callum Ide. In 2019, Fury joined the cast of Love Island, putting his boxing career on hold in order to do so. He matched with Molly-Mae Hague, with the pair coming second in the contest but later getting engaged. He returned to boxing later in the year and became particularly well-known when agreeing to fight YouTube star Logan Paul.

How They’re Related

The more eagle-eyed amongst you will have spotted that Tyson Fury and Tommy Fury share the same father, meaning that they are half-brothers. The fact that they have different mothers is what means they’re not full brothers, but they are close enough to mean that Tyson was willing to be in Tommy’s corner when he took on another YouTube sensation, KSI, in 2023. Tyson attempted to intimidate his brother’s opponent, who claimed that he had been let down by the judges when Tommy Fury was given the win in their fight courtesy of a majority decision from the judges.
